Filembly is a fast, private file converter. No accounts, no watermarks, no file retention — just clean conversions with clear expectations.
Nothing is stored
Your file is uploaded, converted in memory and streamed straight back in the same request. It is never written to disk, never logged and never retained after the response is sent.
Real engines, honest limits
Images run through libvips (sharp), spreadsheets through ExcelJS, and documents through mammoth, pdf.js and pdf-lib. When a conversion is text-fidelity only — like PDF to DOCX — we tell you before you convert, not after.
Defense in depth
Every upload is checked three ways: file extension, MIME type and the actual byte signature of the content. Uploads are size-capped, rate-limited and never executed — they are treated purely as data.
Built to grow
Each conversion family is an isolated adapter behind a common interface. Adding OCR, audio or video support means adding an adapter — not rewriting the app.
Why Filembly exists
Most free file converters are funded by making the experience worse. They queue your file behind a countdown, watermark the output, cap you at a few conversions a day, or quietly keep a copy on a server you know nothing about. The conversion itself is rarely the hard part — the business model around it is.
Filembly is built the other way round. Files are converted in memory and streamed straight back, so there is nothing to retain and nothing to delete. There are no accounts, because we would rather not hold data we do not need. Every conversion is available to everyone, every time.
The other half is honesty about quality. Converting a PDF to Word is a reconstruction, not an unbaking, and pretending otherwise just wastes your time. Wherever an engine has real limits, we state them on the page before you upload — not in a support article afterwards.
What Filembly does not do
Being clear about the boundaries is more useful than a list of features:
- No OCR. Scanned PDFs and photographed documents contain no machine-readable text, and we tell you that instead of returning an empty file.
- No HEIC. The decoder carries patent obligations our image library ships without, so iPhone HEIC photos are not supported yet.
- No PDF compression. Meaningful compression means re-encoding the images inside a document, and a tool that barely shrinks anything is worse than no tool.
- No pixel-perfect PDF to Word. You get clean, editable text; complex layouts, tables and images do not survive extraction.
- No file recovery. Nothing is stored, so if you lose a download we cannot send it again.
Who runs Filembly
Filembly is an independent web service. The conversion engines run on our own servers — your files are not passed to third-party conversion APIs. Questions, bug reports or privacy concerns are always welcome, and our privacy policy documents exactly how files are handled.
