How the PDF to Word (DOCX) conversion works
Filembly reads your PDF with the same PDF engine used by Firefox (pdf.js) and extracts the text content of every page in reading order. Each line becomes a paragraph in a freshly generated DOCX file, so the output opens cleanly in any modern word processor.
Because this is text extraction rather than visual reconstruction, it works best on text-based PDFs: reports, letters, articles, contracts and exported documents.

Limitations to know about
- Layout, images, tables and fonts are not preserved — the output is clean, editable text organised into paragraphs.
- Scanned PDFs and image-only PDFs contain no extractable text, so they are rejected with a clear error rather than producing an empty document. OCR is not currently supported.
- Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened and will return an error.
Privacy and security
Your file is uploaded over HTTPS, converted entirely in memory and streamed straight back to your browser. It is never written to disk, never logged and never retained after the conversion — there is nothing to delete because nothing is stored. Frequently asked questions
Will my converted Word document look exactly like the PDF?
No — this converter extracts the text of your PDF and rebuilds it as clean, editable paragraphs. That makes the output easy to edit, but complex layouts, images and tables from the original PDF are not reproduced. If you need a pixel-perfect copy, keep the PDF; if you need to edit the words, DOCX is the right choice.
Can I convert a scanned PDF to Word?
Not yet. Scanned PDFs are photographs of pages and contain no machine-readable text, which requires OCR (optical character recognition). Filembly detects this case and tells you clearly instead of returning a blank document.
Is it safe to upload a confidential PDF?
Your file is processed entirely in memory and streamed back in the same request. It is never saved to disk, never logged and never retained after the conversion finishes. See our privacy policy for the full details.
Is there a file size limit?
Yes — 4 MB per file, which covers the vast majority of text-based PDFs. Larger files are rejected before upload completes.
