How the JPG to PNG conversion works

Limitations to know about
- PNG files are typically larger than JPGs for photographic content — that's the cost of lossless storage. For photos on the web, WEBP is usually the better target.

Will converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?
No — quality already lost to JPG compression is gone permanently. What PNG gives you is protection from further loss: every future save of the PNG is lossless, which matters when an image goes through multiple rounds of editing.
Why is my PNG bigger than the original JPG?
JPG compresses photos very aggressively by discarding detail your eye barely notices. PNG stores every pixel exactly, which costs more space — often 3 to 10 times more for photographs. For graphics with flat colors and sharp edges, PNG can actually be smaller.
Is my photo's location data removed?
Yes. All EXIF metadata — including GPS coordinates, camera details and timestamps — is stripped during conversion. The image orientation is applied to the pixels first so the photo still displays the right way up.
