Frequently asked questions
Why won't my WEBP file open in the first place?
WEBP is newer (2010) than JPG (1992), and while browsers adopted it quickly, many desktop applications, older photo viewers and some upload forms never added support. Converting to JPG sidesteps the problem entirely.
Will I lose quality converting WEBP to JPG?
There is a second round of lossy compression, but at the default quality of 85 the difference is imperceptible for normal viewing. Avoid converting back and forth repeatedly — keep one original and convert copies from it.
What if my WEBP has a transparent background?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas become white. If you need the transparency preserved, use the WEBP to PNG converter instead.
